In July 2023, KING 5 did a feature on Sessions In Place that’s viewable here

In early 2020, they were six Seattle-area creatives out of work. Now, they’re an Emmy Award-winning multimedia team.

The six — Brent James Driscoll, Austin Glass, Richard McLean, Oliver Stellfox, Benjamin J. Strickland and Derek Zanto — recently won a 2021 regional Emmy in entertainment for their cinematic concert series, Sessions in Place. Founded on April 11, 2020, the livestreams continued for 73 consecutive Saturdays, allowing local musicians and film crew to practice their craft and make some money at a time when many creatives were out of work. Today, the concerts are once a month and can be viewed in-person (locations vary) or streamed online

“We see a great sense of hope for our community and the future of outdoor events,” Evergreen said, “and believe that by utilizing research from the CDC and following local and state guidelines, artists and venues can get back to hosting and playing live music again. Our concerts provide an open, outdoor space where people can safely gather and experience live music for the first time in over a year.”

So far the organization has partnered with The Museum of Flight, R90 lighting, Point Source Audio and Sessions in Place — and hopes to work with local venues moving into the future.

The concept of Sessions In Place was to highlight a local artist in a COVID-19 safe live-stream. Everything on this was donation based with the only thing monetarily supporting the entire project was a meager Patreon account. The whole thing ran on heart.

With a ton of support from Fremont Abbey Arts Center, Black Raven Brewery, and a whole handful of other sponsors that saw the same appeal in this sort of entertainment. It was nothing short of amazing witnessing all of these talented people come together to volunteer their time and skill-set to achieving a unified goal. Sessions In Place is still operating to this day and have moved towards a hybrid format. If you want to go watch genius videographers at work, and catch some live music at the same time, take a peek at their calendar and try one out.

Cleared for Takeoff, the project of Safe & Sound Seattle — a new, music-oriented organization created specifically to host COVID-safe shows — was the large-scale first in-person concert since Cytrus’s July attempt to make drive-in concerts feasible (this dream was squashed a mere five days later when new state restrictions came down) and the first concert since March where audience members were, well, actually a part of the same audience. Held on the pavilion at the Museum of Flight, the sold-out show brought together 200 starved music fans to see Payge Turner and The Black Tones perform.

If you missed the in person show, you can watch the full stream on April 17 at 7 p.m. on Sessions in Place.
